What is a transparent PNG?
PNG is an image format that can store transparency in an alpha channel. Each pixel can be fully visible, fully see-through or anywhere in between. That is why a transparent PNG can sit on top of any color, photo or pattern without a box around it.
JPEG images can't store transparency, so a cutout saved as a JPEG always gets a solid background. SNIP.DO always gives you a PNG, which keeps soft edges, like hair or fur, smooth against whatever you place behind them.
Where transparent PNGs come in handy
- Presentations and documents, where a cutout blends into the slide or page.
- Social media posts, stories and video thumbnails.
- Online stores and websites that show products on a branded background.
- Mockups, collages, stickers and other design projects.
How to make a transparent PNG
Upload your photo
Drop a JPEG, PNG or WebP image (up to 20 MiB) into the editor above, or tap it to pick a photo from your device.
AI removes the background
The model finds the subject, whether it is a person, a product or a pet, and erases everything behind it. Pick Low, Mid or High: Low is fastest and caps the output at 1024 px on the long edge, Mid caps it at 2048 px, and High keeps the original size. The preset controls both edge quality and output size.
Download a transparent PNG or pick a color
Save a PNG with a transparent background, or switch on a solid background color first and download the result with that color filled in.
Transparent PNG questions
Why does the preview show a checkerboard?
The checkerboard only marks the transparent areas of your image. It is not part of the file. When you place the PNG in another app, whatever is behind it shows through.
Can I add a background color instead?
Yes. Turn on “Use solid background color”, pick a preset or type any CSS color, and the downloaded PNG will use that color as its background.
